Investment Advice & Management for the Kansas City Metro
Unbiased investment advice and management from a fee-only fiduciary.
Financial Planning That Actually Accounts for the Kansas-Missouri State Line
The Kansas City metro is unusual: a huge share of households here have income, property, or family ties on both sides of the state line — working in Missouri and living in Kansas, or the reverse. That split matters more than most people realize once you get into retirement income, state tax treatment, and estate planning, and it's exactly the kind of detail a generic national advisor is unlikely to think through carefully. I work with KC-metro clients across both states, in person or virtually, providing independent, fee-only advice as a fiduciary — no commissions, no product sales, full transparency on every fee.

Why the Kansas-Missouri State Line Matters for Your Retirement Plan
Living in Overland Park but working in downtown Kansas City, MO — or the reverse — is common enough in this metro that most households don't think twice about it day to day. But state tax treatment of retirement income, required withdrawals, and even how an estate plan should be structured can differ meaningfully depending on which side of the line you're on when you retire. I don't provide specific state tax figures here because the rules shift and should be confirmed with a CPA for your situation — but coordinating this kind of cross-border planning is something I work through regularly with clients across the KC metro.

Frequently Asked Questions
A: Yes. I am registered as an Investment Advisor Representative (IAR) under the Investment Advisors Act Of 1940. Under this federal requirement, if you’re acting in an investment adviser representative (IAR) capacity, you’re a fiduciary. As a fiduciary, I am legally obligated to put my client's interests ahead of mine and act in my client's best interests at all times. This means that I must provide advice that is suitable for my client's needs and risk tolerance and must disclose any potential conflicts of interest.
A: You can search for registrations at the SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure Website: https://adviserinfo.sec.gov/ (My CRD#: 2131294)
A: It can, particularly around state income tax treatment of retirement withdrawals and Social Security, and around how an estate plan should be structured if you own property in both states. This is one of the most common planning conversations I have with KC-metro clients, and it's worth addressing directly with a CPA and advisor working together, rather than assuming your situation is the same as a single-state household's.
A: Yes. I’ve chosen Charles Schwab to be the custodian for all my clients. The first thing to remember is your securities—like stocks, bonds, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, or money market funds—held at Schwab are yours. The SEC's Customer Protection Rule safeguards customer assets at brokerage firms by preventing firms from using customer assets to finance their own proprietary businesses. I can also rest easy at night knowing that Schwab holds itself to the highest security standards when it comes to safeguarding my client’s assets. You can learn more about how your assets are protected by Charles Schwab at https://www.schwab.com/legal/account-protection.
A: Yes. My office is in Overland Park, KS, but I work with clients throughout the KC metro on both sides of the state line, in person or virtually, and coordinate with clients' CPAs when cross-state tax questions come up.
First, RIAs are legally obligated to act in your best interest. They also tend to provide more personalized services. Since they aren't paid on commission, they don't have an incentive simply to deal with only when selling something. RIAs typically have transparent fee structures, often charging a percentage of assets under management or a flat fee, which aligns their interests with yours.
Many investors are unaware of, or confused about, the various fees they may pay when investing. Not my clients! We believe in Fiduciary transparency. Our fee schedule is 0.50% to 0.95% of assets under management annually. We can also negotiate a flat fee for outside investment advice. Our minimum account size is $500,000 of investable assets. However, our services are also available to active accumulators under 45 with a minimum of only $300,000.
