Fee-Only Financial Advisor & Retirement Planner in Lawrence, KS
Unbiased investment advice and management from a fee-only fiduciary.
Financial Planning for Lawrence, KS Homeowners and Long-Term Residents
Lawrence has changed a lot over the past two decades — home values have climbed well beyond what many longtime residents paid, the town has grown into its own economic center rather than just a KU commuter suburb, and a lot of households here now split income and time between Lawrence, Topeka, and the greater KC metro. That combination creates real planning complexity: a home that's appreciated significantly and needs to be factored into retirement or legacy planning, income earned across state lines, and a retirement picture that doesn't look like a generic national template. I work with Lawrence households — in person or virtually — as a fee-only fiduciary, which means no commissions, no product sales, and full transparency on every fee.

Who We Work With in Lawrence
Most of my Lawrence-area clients fall into one of a few groups: KU faculty and staff approaching a KPERS or retirement plan decision, longtime Lawrence homeowners weighing whether to retire in place, and professionals commuting to Topeka or the KC metro who want a plan that reflects their actual life rather than a one-size-fits-all model. If any of that sounds familiar, it's likely I've worked through a similar situation before. If you're comparing advisors, here are the questions I'd ask before hiring anyone.

Frequently Asked Questions
A: Yes. I am registered as an Investment Advisor Representative (IAR) under the Investment Advisors Act Of 1940. Under this federal requirement, if you’re acting in an investment adviser representative (IAR) capacity, you’re a fiduciary. As a fiduciary, I am legally obligated to put my client's interests ahead of mine and act in my client's best interests at all times. This means that I must provide advice that is suitable for my client's needs and risk tolerance and must disclose any potential conflicts of interest. For the specific questions I think you should ask any advisor before hiring them — fee-only or not — see my full guide here.
A: You can search for registrations at the SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure Website: https://adviserinfo.sec.gov/ (My CRD#: 2131294)
A: Lawrence has seen meaningful home price appreciation over the past several years, and for a lot of longtime residents, home equity now represents a much larger share of their net worth than it used to. Whether that equity should stay invested in the home, be tapped through downsizing, or factor into a legacy plan for kids or grandkids depends on your specific goals — it's a conversation I have often with Lawrence clients.
A: Yes. I’ve chosen Charles Schwab to be the custodian for all my clients. The first thing to remember is your securities—like stocks, bonds, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, or money market funds—held at Schwab are yours. The SEC's Customer Protection Rule safeguards customer assets at brokerage firms by preventing firms from using customer assets to finance their own proprietary businesses. I can also rest easy at night knowing that Schwab holds itself to the highest security standards when it comes to safeguarding my client’s assets. You can learn more about how your assets are protected by Charles Schwab at https://www.schwab.com/legal/account-protection.
A: Lawrence offers a lower cost of living than much of the KC metro, along with the amenities of a college town — but it also means a smaller pool of specialized retirement and tax-planning resources close to home. That's part of why I work with Lawrence clients virtually as easily as in person.
First, RIAs are legally obligated to act in your best interest. They also tend to provide more personalized services. Since they aren't paid on commission, they don't have an incentive simply to deal with only when selling something. RIAs typically have transparent fee structures, often charging a percentage of assets under management or a flat fee, which aligns their interests with yours.
Many investors are unaware of, or confused about, the various fees they may pay when investing. Not my clients! We believe in Fiduciary transparency. Our fee schedule is 0.50% to 0.95% of assets under management annually. We can also negotiate a flat fee for outside investment advice. Our minimum account size is $500,000 of investable assets. However, our services are also available to active accumulators under 45 with a minimum of only $300,000.
